Hey there,

If I’m honest, things are frantic in the Buffet office at the moment. Indeed, lot of concerts happening this upcoming month, a stack of cd to listen and the March edition to prepare. In the meantime, here’s the February issue that include, drawings, a game and music reviews. You know, the stuff that we 20 something year old love to brag about in our blogs…;p

We also came across a neat little library in the Mile-End area that sells independent publications such as novels, graphic novels and fanzines and we thought we would share their address.

Btw, the 25th anniversary of Thriller is out. That’s the perfect moment to grab a red leather jacket, moonwalk to your nearest corner shop and buy the choice of a generation beverage. Like he would say: CHAMON!

The Mission District Café L’inco February 26,08





These days, it seems that liking top 40 music isn’t a trap to the walk of shame anymore. Indeed, in an era where the pompous site Pitchfork puts Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson songs in its end of the year best single list, you know that it’s ok to show your love for guilty pleasure gems. Montreal’s The Mission District are aware of this trend and don’t really care about pleasing Panda Bear loving hipsters. Their singer David Rancourt told me that their goal is to make pop music with big choruses and become the next Simple Plan. Last January, they performed a tight little set at l’inco, showing their knack for catchy riffs and teen angst lyrics. As the song Hyper Modern started, the crowd got its first taste of sugary voice mixed with a guitar sound reminiscent of The Cure. Don’t write me off and Youth Games broke the ice and displayed a vulnerable touch that could melt any emo girl heart. Then, out of nowhere, a drum pattern like the one on Bowie’s the Modern Love blew up from the speakers and displayed the brilliant genius of drummer Mike Hand. A sizzling wall of guitar sound courtesy of Rob Rousseau and Travis Barfoot introduced the stadium-sized chorus of Come On, a song that wouldn’t be out of place as #1 on the Billboard top 40.They saved their best for last with The Age Of Pretending, a catchy blend of Blink 182 riff with a Fall out boy like chorus that showcases the adventurous side of teenage love relationship. As the Montreal sextet first album entitled Youth Games it out next March, we can only hope to see them headline the next Warped tour.

En effet, ouvert en Octobre 2007 dans le Mile-End, la librairie Drawn and Quarterly offre autant des fanzines que des bd en passant par le roman.On y retrouve du matériel par des artistes tels Chester Brown,Julie Doucet,Michel Rabagliati,Guy Delisle et même Richard Crumb.De plus, des concerts gratuits de musiciens du coin y sont tenus sur une base régulière ainsi que des ateliers d’arts plastiques pour enfants.C’est aussi l’endroit idéal pour y dénicher une lecture inédite et même des Pez à l’effigie des Moomins !Bref, l’ambiance DIY vous charmera et peut-être serez-vous inspiré à publier vos propres idées lors du prochain Expozine.

Jesus on a Saturday Night-Montoire

Lone gone are the heydays of Britpop: the geek charm of Pulp, the androgyny of Suede and of course, the feud between Blur and Oasis. However, those last 2 acts just appeared to have inspired Montreal’s Montoire, a band that worships all the decadence of the late 90’s coke infused music. Brit sceneWith Jesus on a Saturday night, they bring to our ears a bloated sound that include a stomping beat mixed with Dandy Warholesque vocals ,spooky keyboard and the lovable cliché of an helicopter sound. White Winter Hymnal-Fleet Foxes

Le son Americana des Band of Horses et autres My Morning Jacket influence encore une fois de plus un groupe de barbus fervent de Fleetwood Mac. Leur chanson White Winter Hymnal plonge l’auditeur dans une atmosphère paisible rappelant une soirée autour d’un feu de foyer dans l’appartement d’Arcade Fire. Le chant sonne comme une chorale et la production rend hommage au fameux Wall of Sound pour créer une magnifique hymne au calme hivernal.Le groupe de Washington sera de passage le 1 Avril prochain à Montréal avec Blitzen Trapper.www.myspace.com/fleetfoxes

Alongside the red color lover Jack and Meg White, Laura Mary Carter and Steven Ansell, a duo from Brighton are causing a ruckus in the UK with their infectious rock music. The Age of Pretending-The Mission District

Vous êtes vous déjà demandé comment Blink 182 aurait sonné aujourd’hui si le groupe n’avait pas explosé sous la pression de leurs egos? Si oui, le groupe montréalais The Mission District est sûrement la réponse. Réunissant un refrain contagieux et une guitare pop à la The Smiths,la chanson est une véritable hymne pop.De plus, la voix mélancolique du chanteur David Rancourt se distance des autres crooners pops punk et emmène un souffle d’originalité.Bref, une pièce qui donne envie de revivre ses premiers amours d’adolescent! www.myspace.com/themissiondistrict

Bonjour, et bienvenue à cette deuxième édition de Buffet.
Ce numéro de Janvier présente des informations sur le récent film Cloverfield, un retour sur un spectacle de Mathias Mental donné en Décembre dernier et des suggestions de pièces musicales à découvrir.
De plus,ce mois-ci marque l’arrivée de 2 nouveaux collaborateurs :

Catherine Dumouchel, une jeune à l’affût des tous derniers balbutiements culturels et touristiques de la ville qui nous offre un article sur une toute nouvelle friperie Montréalaise.

Je tiens aussi à remercier ceux qui on prit le temps de visiter le kiosque Buffet au dernier Expozine. Grâce à vous, j’ai eu la chance de distribuer plus de 200 copies et vous informer des sujets artistiques me tenant à cœur.

CLOVERFIELD
Back in the summer of 2007, those who attended a screening of the long awaited Transformers flick witnessed something strange on the silver screen, when a trailer featuring handheld camera footage of some 20 something’s partying in a spacious Manhattan loft was shown. At this point nothing really exciting was happening, until the floor started to shake and a vociferous roar was heard. After some questioning, the partygoers came to conclusion that they weren’t safe anymore when they saw explosions and a flying statue of liberty head falling in the middle of the street. Afterwards, a simple date was shown, 1-18-08 with the name of producer J.J Abrahams attached. This teaser literally transformed geeks from all over the world in wannabe David Caruso, analyzing it frame by frame. Soon enough, fake company website such as Slusho.jp and Tagruato.jp were launched and clues regarding the backstory of the movie started to appear. Apparently Tagruato, a Japanese corporation is in search of deep-sea nectar, and is opening a deep sea drilling station near New York. This nectar is rumored to be the secret ingredient of a beverage called Slusho, which is a parent company of Tagruato. In November, the business site is hacked by Tidowave, a group of activist who claims that Tagruato is destroying ocean life with their drilling activities. Soon after, reports that the seabed nectar is dangerous to the human health starts to show up, exposing that the ingredient brings accelerated cell growth, increased strength, increased soft muscle tissue growth, sharper eyesight and a feeling around your body like a “wave of happiness”. On December 27th, the station is destroyed by something and news videos soon report the incident. All the workers seem to have disappeared and Tidowave is considered the main suspect. Around the same time, the main character of the movie, Rob, is planning to move to Japan after getting a job at Tagruato. All those information are not necessary to understand the main story, but they do add a little more dept to the movie, which is only 90mins. With Cloverfield, J.J Abrahams claims that he has created with his team a new genre of monster movie that focuses on the characters struggle to stay alive, instead of the classic Godzilla approach. The moviegoers might not end up knowing for sure what the monster looks like, but they’ll be able to judge if the hype was more Blair Witch or Snakes on a plane worthy.
Cloverfield opens on January 18.

Mathias Mental- 13 Décembre 07 @ Zoobizarre

Malgré le froid flagrant qui immergeait la métropole le 13 décembre dernier, plusieurs curieux se sont réunis dans la caverne qu’est le Zoobizarre , pour assister au spectacle de la nouvelle sensation musicale, Mathias Mental. Celui-ci, qui depuis le dernier Pop Montréal roule à bord d’un station wagon de succès critique ,a réussit à remplir la minuscule salle grâce à un efficace bouche-à-oreille. Arrivant sur scène avec des airs posés, Mathias et ses musiciens entreprirent Morning By Numbers. Une chanson entraînante qui a pour thème le train de vie quotidien,qui dans sa banalité, offre un joyeux regard sur la routine matinale. Avec celle-ci, le troubadour a réussi à charmer le public et le mettre dans la poche de son manteau Members Only. Par la suite, les Motel Sunrise et Going Down ont fracassé les tympans des fans avec un heureux mélange de paroles égrillardes et de distorsion assourdissante, gracieuseté de l’acoustique pitoyable de la salle . Après seulement 3 chansons, 3 cordes de guitare ont pris la fuite, laissant Mathias avec un instrument qui aurait pu servir au B-52s. Avec audace, il continua comme si de rien n’était et se vida le cœur avec 555-Love . Cette chanson qui met à l’avant-plan un orgue mélancolique est une vraie bombe pop qui n’attend qu’à connaître un succès à la Hey There Delilah. D’ailleurs, cet orgue si familier marqua le début de Life in the carpool lane, une chanson idéale pour une promenade en voiture après avoir cueillit un numéro dans une soirée peu banale. Pendant la pièce, le poète urbain s’est même permis un plongeon dans la foule tout en continuant à s’époumoner sur la cacophonie environnante.
La pièce de résistance fut sans aucun doute She’s a Character, une ode pop pour toutes les femmes qui prêchent la démence.De plus, les cris de la choriste Sally Paradise et son chapeau d’ours étaient un indice qu’elle était peu être l’inspiration de la chanson.Bref, vous devez capturer l’énergumène qu’est Mental sur scène, il détient la clé de votre folie interne.

Radio Christiane-The Virgins

For those who might think the so-called New York “scene” hasn’t spawned anything good since 2002, you might want to think twice. Indeed, a new bunch of malnourished model type guys have just appeared again, and they’re ready to make you relive the buzz you felt when you first went to a bar with girl jeans on. The Virgins might end up being a short-lived act, but their song Radio Christiane is one of the best song 2007 gave us. Starting with a stomping beat mixed with synth bleeps, the track reveals a layer of melancholy that is sometimes overlooked in modern rock songs. The singer try to convince a girl to let loose, using an aloof croon that makes Julian Casablancas sounds full of life. The old school vibe of CBGB is all over it and reminds us of how simple it is to make a pop gem using an old 4 tracks. www.myspace.com/thevirginsnyc


Hank’s Theme- Tree Adams & Tyler Bates

Peter, Bjorn & John ont sans aucun doute créé le meilleur one-hit wonder de la décennie avec Young Folks.Une pièce qui a été malheureusement exploitée par une multitude de médias, à un point tel que l’entendre n’était plus une partie de plaisir.N’empêche,les compositeurs Tree Adams et Tyler Bates se sont permis de prendre le schéma de celle-ci et de la transformer en thème pour Hank Moodie personnage principal de la série américaine Californication. La chanson instrumentale contient les mêmes éléments que Young Folks soit : sifflements,basse dense et tam tam. La mélodie a été modifiée pour une un peu moins naïve que l’originale, mais reste quand même toujours mémorable. Bref, Hank’s Theme est le parfait compagnon au hit de 2006 et va sans doute rassasier les fans qui attendent toujours sa suite. www.treeadams.com

Piano 4 Hands- The Winter Gloves

It is common sense among music aficionados that listening to a song in the right environment can alter a mood. A simple tune can indeed transform your surroundings into a sensorial cinematographic experience. With the warm and cozy Piano 4 Hands, Montreal’s The Winter Gloves deliver a song that could soundtrack the scenery of a winter storm. Using a slow drum machine beat and some keyboard effects, the track sounds like an intimate trip into lost love memories. The singer’s monotone chant recalls the one of Ben Gibbard and has an elusive layer of sorrow that guides us into the souvenir of a past relationship. Even though The Postal Service and Broken Social Scene influences, this fanfare of wretchedness remains a unique piece of chamber pop. So, grab the song, put it in your music player and go take a walk outside. You might come back feeling like you were the hero of Wicker Park for a moment.

Eccentric Bird Song- Terrestrial Council

À sa sortie en 1975, Discreet Music de Brian Eno a réussi à lancer le mouvement musicale ambiant tout en dévoilant une autre facette du musicien glam. Celui-ci a alors entrepris la réalisation de d’autres albums ambiants dont le fameux Ambient 1 : Music for airport. Faisant appel aux effets électroniques du moog ainsi qu’à des instruments plus antiques comme le piano, l’artiste donnera la parole aux environnements nous entourant. Tout comme lui, le jeune Tamás Czégény de Vancouver , invite les gens à prêter oreilles aux sons et objets nous entourant grâce à son projet Terrestrial Council.Débutant avec une ligne d’orgue fantasmagorique, des chants d’oiseaux viennent se rajouter à la pièce et plonge lentement l’auditeur vers un état d’accalmie. L’ambiance baroque rappelle le meilleur de Squarepusher et réussit à évoquer des images tel un levé de soleil débonnaire.Idéal si vous recherchez un petit coin de paradis l’instant d’une chanson... www.terrestrialcouncil.com
