Hi,
so for our final project, Lachlan and me decided to reconstruct the song Obstacle 1 by Interpol, using sampled instruments and beats. We thought it would be an amazing idea to not only do a 'remix' but at the same time use different sound. In the end , we didn't want the song to sound too similar to the original one.We wanted to create something more abstract.
The sampled sound of french horns and piano really added a glossy sheen on the song . Moreover, to create the drum pattern, we used dissimilar sounds like doors slamming, drumsticks on a plastic bowl and a drummachine.
In the end, we were really satisfied with our project and we look forward to create new exciting music.

Griffinsound
Prior to go on the sound walk, I must admit I was a bit skeptic regarding the premise of such an activity. When I told my parents about it I was taken aback, they seemed so excited! They told me that my great-grandparents were Irish descendents that had lived in the neighborhood back in the 1930’s. Therefore, it made me wants to go and discover the district my ancestors had stepped feet in.
I choose to go on a Friday since I thought I would see some action in the streets. Boy was I wrong! The streets reminded me of a ghost town. Before listening to the sound files, I made the mistake to go to the point on the map since I thought it was the starting line. When I got there it started pouring rain and it became very cold all of a sudden. I called Cory Campbell for more information and he told me I had to start at corner Peel and Notre-Dame. Consequently, I walk all the way back, covered in mud and feeling very sick. However, I was determined to get this sound tour done.
When I got to Peel and Notre-Dame, I hit play and tried to follow the steps as much as I could. I thought it took a while for me to get the right pace, but when I got it, I felt like being on a treasure hunt! One of the first locations that stunned me was the old brewery. I can’t believe kids use to hang out there and climb to the top. I guess back then kids where tougher and took more risks. Afterwards, seeing the train bridge stills standing still made me missed an era I never knew. A short while after, the plane crash story really had me in suspense. The sound effects of the plane crash where so realistic that I had to hit pause to catch a breath and see that the streets were calm. Hearing about how this accident shocked the community was very gloomy and powerful.
One of the stories that made me the most curious was definitively the ghost one. Indeed, I was surprised to hear that a prostitute had been murdered and decapitated in those streets. As the old Griffintown were telling the story, I got shivers and started to look around for a ghost that knew wouldn’t be there. A headless woman roaming those streets? Yeah right…
When I saw the horse palace, I did indeed see some horses. I also thought that the fire station was amazing looking. Of course they had renovated it, but it still kept an old fashioned look. I’m sure if some citizen in the area today they would celebrate corpus cristi near it.
As I was walking, the voices completely transported me to another era. Despite the modern industries, I could imagine the picture perfect images of old houses and Irish folks walking the streets. It made me wish I had been born 60 years ago to experience it. I think it’s a shame that they tore down the houses to build an industrial park. I look forward to see what the city is going to do about its current condition. I will also recommend this sound walk to my family and friends.

Blog #!
When watching the Oscars, we might not care for the best sound awards category like the winners do, but we all have sounds that we enjoy. Therefore, words are not enough to describe the feelings I have towards some particular sounds. From the simple mechanical noise of the elliptical machine at the local gym to Morrissey sultry voice, I’m surrounded on a daily basis by sonorities that affect my mind and mood. Here’s are some that will probably be forever a part of my life.
1) Elliptical machine @ Nautilus Plus Mont-Royal
Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve always enjoyed food a bit more than some and have a love/hate relationship with physical activities. As I was growing old, I quickly saw my waistline expanding beyond my biggest dreams. Consequently at age 14, I was considered obese. Therefore, I decided to subscribe to the local gym and build a body that would represent my physical ideals. I quickly found affection for the elliptical machine, since it gave me the chance to lose a lot of calories without too much effort. The soft sound of the device became part of my daily gym routine and reminds me on how lucky I am to be
healthy and lean.

2) My friend’s cell phone in the early morning @ My friends’ living room
Usually when I go out on a Saturday night, I don’t come home alone. Sometimes it is a girl(s), sometimes my best mates. For quite a while now, every time I come back and crash on my friend’s sofa, I have the awful luck of hearing his cell phone ring at 5 am due to a booty call. It is a weird mix of vibration and shrieking sounds that scares the shit out of me every time. The worst part is that he doesn’t even wake up to turn it off or answer it. One time, I might just take the call and join the girl!

3) Seth Rogen’s laugh @ My DVD player
It is rare that I will laugh out loud when I watch a comedy on my own. However, there’s a slight exception when I watch a Seth Rogen flick. Besides the funny Apatow’s approved improvised dialogue and sight gags, I can’t stop giggling when I hear Rogen’s laugh. The sound is so warm and comforting that it gives me the feeling he is one of my buddy. Having met him last summer at the Just for Laughs festival, I can honestly say that he is a very kind gentleman not unlike the characters he plays.

4)Paul Bank’s guitar @ My iPod
There’s not a day that goes by without me listening to Interpol. Since I’ve discovered the band in 2003, I’ve been following their career and rocking their post-punk antics on a regular basis. Every time I hear a song by the band, I listen closely to Paul Bank’s guitar and it immediately brings me back to my first love. With only a guitar, he’s able to create a blend of gloomy and sorrowful notes that recall Bernard Sumner’s work in Joy Division. In the end, a 6 stringed guitar can make a grown man shiver and occasionally weep.

5) Morrissey’s voice @ My iPod
Who would have guessed that a shy mop haired teen from Manchester would become a quiff-sporting troubadour that has over a million fans? Certainly not me! Despite having no musical abilities, the charming man that is Morrissey has transformed the world of indie rock with a powerful voice that transcends time and space. I can’t recall the number of times I’ve listened to Ask and Suedehead and modeled my hair after his and started singing out loud. His voice is the epitome of cool and will remain forever engraved in my brain. When I feel sad, I can just close my eyes and let the Mozzer transport me to a place where there’s music, there’s people and they’re young and alive.

Buffet 3

Buffet #3 February 2008
Hey there,
If I’m honest, things are frantic in the Buffet office at the moment. Indeed, lot of concerts happening this upcoming month, a stack of cd to listen and the March edition to prepare. In the meantime, here’s the February issue that include, drawings, a game and music reviews. You know, the stuff that we 20 something year old love to brag about in our blogs…;p
We also came across a neat little library in the Mile-End area that sells independent publications such as novels, graphic novels and fanzines and we thought we would share their address.
Btw, the 25th anniversary of Thriller is out. That’s the perfect moment to grab a red leather jacket, moonwalk to your nearest corner shop and buy the choice of a generation beverage. Like he would say: CHAMON!
Take care folks!
James.

The Mission District Café L’inco February 26,08

These days, it seems that liking top 40 music isn’t a trap to the walk of shame anymore. Indeed, in an era where the pompous site Pitchfork puts Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson songs in its end of the year best single list, you know that it’s ok to show your love for guilty pleasure gems. Montreal’s The Mission District are aware of this trend and don’t really care about pleasing Panda Bear loving hipsters. Their singer David Rancourt told me that their goal is to make pop music with big choruses and become the next Simple Plan. Last January, they performed a tight little set at l’inco, showing their knack for catchy riffs and teen angst lyrics. As the song Hyper Modern started, the crowd got its first taste of sugary voice mixed with a guitar sound reminiscent of The Cure. Don’t write me off and Youth Games broke the ice and displayed a vulnerable touch that could melt any emo girl heart. Then, out of nowhere, a drum pattern like the one on Bowie’s the Modern Love blew up from the speakers and displayed the brilliant genius of drummer Mike Hand. A sizzling wall of guitar sound courtesy of Rob Rousseau and Travis Barfoot introduced the stadium-sized chorus of Come On, a song that wouldn’t be out of place as #1 on the Billboard top 40.They saved their best for last with The Age Of Pretending, a catchy blend of Blink 182 riff with a Fall out boy like chorus that showcases the adventurous side of teenage love relationship. As the Montreal sextet first album entitled Youth Games it out next March, we can only hope to see them headline the next Warped tour.

C-04-Songs to discover
Jesus on a Saturday Night-Montoire
Lone gone are the heydays of Britpop: the geek charm of Pulp, the androgyny of Suede and of course, the feud between Blur and Oasis. However, those last 2 acts just appeared to have inspired Montreal’s Montoire, a band that worships all the decadence of the late 90’s coke infused music. Brit sceneWith Jesus on a Saturday night, they bring to our ears a bloated sound that include a stomping beat mixed with Dandy Warholesque vocals ,spooky keyboard and the lovable cliché of an helicopter sound. Will this joyful pop gem be enough to resuscitate a brit pop craze? We’ll just have to wait and see… www.myspace.com/montoire
White Winter Hymnal-Fleet Foxes
I wish I was someone better-Blood Red Shoes
Alongside the red color lover Jack and Meg White, Laura Mary Carter and Steven Ansell, a duo from Brighton are causing a ruckus in the UK with their infectious rock music. With its Gang of Four guitar sound and 130bpm drum pattern, this song is obviously meant to be played loud while running away from a former lover who’s furious at you .If you don’t find yourself air drumming to the track, you might as well be an amputee. www.myspace.com/bloodredshoes
The Age of Pretending-The Mission District

CLOVERFIELD
Back in the summer of 2007, those who attended a screening of the long awaited Transformers flick witnessed something strange on the silver screen, when a trailer featuring handheld camera footage of some 20 something’s partying in a spacious Manhattan loft was shown. At this point nothing really exciting was happening, until the floor started to shake and a vociferous roar was heard. After some questioning, the partygoers came to conclusion that they weren’t safe anymore when they saw explosions and a flying statue of liberty head falling in the middle of the street. Afterwards, a simple date was shown, 1-18-08 with the name of producer J.J Abrahams attached. This teaser literally transformed geeks from all over the world in wannabe David Caruso, analyzing it frame by frame. Soon enough, fake company website such as Slusho.jp and Tagruato.jp were launched and clues regarding the backstory of the movie started to appear. Apparently Tagruato, a Japanese corporation is in search of deep-sea nectar, and is opening a deep sea drilling station near New York. This nectar is rumored to be the secret ingredient of a beverage called Slusho, which is a parent company of Tagruato. In November, the business site is hacked by Tidowave, a group of activist who claims that Tagruato is destroying ocean life with their drilling activities. Soon after, reports that the seabed nectar is dangerous to the human health starts to show up, exposing that the ingredient brings accelerated cell growth, increased strength, increased soft muscle tissue growth, sharper eyesight and a feeling around your body like a “wave of happiness”. On December 27th, the station is destroyed by something and news videos soon report the incident. All the workers seem to have disappeared and Tidowave is considered the main suspect. Around the same time, the main character of the movie, Rob, is planning to move to Japan after getting a job at Tagruato. All those information are not necessary to understand the main story, but they do add a little more dept to the movie, which is only 90mins. With Cloverfield, J.J Abrahams claims that he has created with his team a new genre of monster movie that focuses on the characters struggle to stay alive, instead of the classic Godzilla approach. The moviegoers might not end up knowing for sure what the monster looks like, but they’ll be able to judge if the hype was more Blair Witch or Snakes on a plane worthy.
Cloverfield opens on January 18.

C-04: Songs to discover

Radio Christiane-The Virgins
For those who might think the so-called New York “scene” hasn’t spawned anything good since 2002, you might want to think twice. Indeed, a new bunch of malnourished model type guys have just appeared again, and they’re ready to make you relive the buzz you felt when you first went to a bar with girl jeans on. The Virgins might end up being a short-lived act, but their song Radio Christiane is one of the best song 2007 gave us. Starting with a stomping beat mixed with synth bleeps, the track reveals a layer of melancholy that is sometimes overlooked in modern rock songs. The singer try to convince a girl to let loose, using an aloof croon that makes Julian Casablancas sounds full of life. The old school vibe of CBGB is all over it and reminds us of how simple it is to make a pop gem using an old 4 tracks. www.myspace.com/thevirginsnyc
Hank’s Theme- Tree Adams & Tyler Bates
Piano 4 Hands- The Winter Gloves
It is common sense among music aficionados that listening to a song in the right environment can alter a mood. A simple tune can indeed transform your surroundings into a sensorial cinematographic experience. With the warm and cozy Piano 4 Hands, Montreal’s The Winter Gloves deliver a song that could soundtrack the scenery of a winter storm. Using a slow drum machine beat and some keyboard effects, the track sounds like an intimate trip into lost love memories. The singer’s monotone chant recalls the one of Ben Gibbard and has an elusive layer of sorrow that guides us into the souvenir of a past relationship. Even though The Postal Service and Broken Social Scene influences, this fanfare of wretchedness remains a unique piece of chamber pop. So, grab the song, put it in your music player and go take a walk outside. You might come back feeling like you were the hero of Wicker Park for a moment.

Eccentric Bird Song- Terrestrial Council

Welcome to Buffet,
A free fanzine made with a D.I.Y approach, which features various topics regarding music, arts, movies and more. It’s a way for me to share my thoughts and information on subjects that are not always enough covered in the medias.
This little booklet is still at its development stage and will be improved in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, this December edition features a top 3 list of the albums that brought a breath of fresh air in 2007, some Wes Anderson’s movies trivia, concert reviews and more!
Oh, and the reason why it’s called Buffet? Well it can be said in both French and English (the magazine is written in both language) and just like a food buffet, it presents an assortment of bits and pieces ready to be discovered. Sadly, Warren Buffett didn’t have any input in its creation.

Si Public Enemy a déjà proclamé “ Don’t Believe the Hype”,cette fois-ci croyez-y! MGMT's Myspace
2-Mathias Mental- Sincere Salutations

This weird musical OVNI first appeared back in October 2007 at the Pop Montreal Festival with a bunch of well-crafted pop songs. Mathias Mental has created meticulous catchy melodies that are simple enough to whistle while doing the laundry or while walking back home after a shitty night at a bar. With the release of Sincere Salutations, Mental just achieved a level of sincerity that will appeal to any Daniel Johnston fans. Just like his counterpart, he has some amusing cd artwork and a knack for heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics that will stick a smile on the face of any indie kids. A song like Duotone melts lo-fi guitars to puppy dogs’ references, while Doin Fine aims for a pulsing drum machine beat that could soundtrack a morning run in the park. Even with his thick French-Canadian accent, Mathias manages to create a feeling of melancholic joy without losing any credibility. The gem of the album is 555-Love, an acoustic ballad perfect for a love declaration mixtape. With a heavy organ sound and a chorus that any emo musician would kill himself for, the song is begging for a mass sing-a-long. Like a modern day Jean Leloup, Mathias Mental has a touch to communicate urban poetry through haunting numbers that reflect our daily lives. The lo-fi gloss reminds early Beck and why a D.I.Y approach is always exciting since you’re never quite sure where the artist is going to take you. Furthermore, make sure to catch him live, since his on-stage antics play with the fine line between odd and funny. Lasers, bear mask and crazy dancers are his secret weapons! Mathias Mental's Myspace

Après une écoute, the sweat will have descended! Les Savy Fav's Myspace

C-04 : Songs to discover
1) Cut Copy- So Haunted
2) MGMT- The Handshake
Bowie may have inspired plenty of Pitchfork-approved musical acts with his Ziggy Stardust era, but recently he hasn’t showed up in songs in his Berlin era incarnation. Brooklyn’s MGMT got the message and created a track that echoes early krautrock such as NEU! mixed with eerie Bowie type vocals. This gem could have passed for a Low demo and generates a dreamy 70’s feeling just like a song featured on the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack. Close your eyes, play the track and picture yourself giving a smooth handshake to David Robert Jones.
3) Shankar/Jaikishan- Title music Bombay Talkie
4) Kevin Drew- TBTF
4 letters, 1 skilled musician, the perfect match to send a message of love clear enough to melt any girl’s heart away. With this track, Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew delivers a piece of catchy jangle pop that could soundtrack an indie coming of age movie. Perfect for the ultimate love scene where the main character, a troubled guy in his 20s, is kissing his girlfriend in the rain while stop-motion hearts are forming around their heads. This song is too beautiful to not be heard.

Band of horses!
